Memorial Cup Travel Planning: Preparing for a Canadian Hockey Getaway

A verified-first, flexible approach to planning a trip around Canada's junior hockey championship — without guesswork, inflated promises or risky deposits.

Introduction to Hockey Travel Planning

Planning a Memorial Cup trip is different from planning around a fixed concert or conference. The venue and dates are known in advance — the matchups are not.

Three of the four teams earn their place through league playoffs that wrap up shortly before the tournament. If you are following a specific club, you may only know for certain that it qualified a week or two before the opening game. If you are a neutral fan or live near the host city, you have more freedom but still face the same demand for rooms and tickets.

The solution is a plan built on verified information and flexible bookings. This guide explains what to check and where to check it. It does not list prices, schedules or travel times, because those change and should always come from the provider.

Our promise to readers

We never sell tickets, travel packages or "getaway" prizes, and we never ask for deposits. Any message claiming to offer these on our behalf is not from us.

Book with the official ticket channel and established travel providers only.

Your Planning Route

Six stages, in the order we recommend working through them.

Step 1

Checking Verified Tournament Dates

Start with CHL.ca. For 2026 the tournament ran in Kelowna from May 21 (trophy arrival) to the May 31 final. For 2027, CHL materials place the Guelph tournament in late May, with dates listed as May 21–30, 2027; one league release references a May 20 start. Confirm the final schedule directly with the CHL before booking.

Step 2

Understanding Host-City Locations

Look at where the arena sits relative to the downtown core, transit routes and the areas where you might stay. A municipal map and the venue's official "getting here" information are the most reliable starting points. Our Host Cities page covers each venue.

Step 3

Transportation Considerations

Compare flying, rail, intercity bus and driving based on your starting point. Get schedules and fares directly from the operators. Once in town, check local transit, taxi and ride-hailing options, and read the venue's parking guidance — downtown arenas can have limited nearby parking.

Step 4

Accommodation Research

Major events need a lot of rooms; Guelph's own planning documents noted the Memorial Cup requires multiple hotel locations for teams, officials and visitors. Book directly with established providers, read cancellation terms carefully and consider nearby communities if the host city is busy.

Step 5

Budget Planning

Build a realistic budget with categories rather than guesses: tickets, transport, accommodation, meals, local transit or parking, insurance and a contingency amount. Use current quotes from providers, and decide in advance how much you are willing to lose if plans change.

Step 6

Ticket Information Sources

Use only the ticketing information published by the CHL and the host club. Some editions offer full-tournament packages; availability and options vary each year. Avoid unofficial sellers, and never pay by e-transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency to an individual.

Arena Accessibility

Contact the venue or official ticket channel before purchasing to ask about accessible seating, companion seats, entrances, elevators, washrooms, drop-off points and service-animal policies. Ask the same questions of your accommodation and transport providers. More questions to ask are listed in our fan-experience guide.

Weather and Seasonal Considerations

The tournament takes place in late spring, when Canadian weather can be changeable — mild, rainy or cool depending on the region and the day. Check the forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada closer to your trip, pack layers and a rain jacket, and remember that arenas are kept cool for the ice surface.

Responsible and Flexible Travel Plans

Choose refundable or changeable bookings where you can, keep confirmation emails organised, and read travel-insurance terms closely. Be kind to the host community: respect residential streets near the arena, support local businesses and never drink and drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book accommodation for a Memorial Cup?

Earlier is generally better because host cities can see heavy demand, but book refundable options where possible. Your team may not qualify, and the full field can be set only days before the tournament.

Does Memorial Cup Getaway offer travel packages?

No. We do not sell packages, accept deposits or book travel. Book directly with established airlines, rail and bus operators, car-rental companies and accommodation providers.

How do I spot a ticket or travel scam?

Warning signs include prices far below the norm, pressure to pay quickly, requests for e-transfers, gift cards or cryptocurrency, and sellers who are not listed by the CHL or host club. When in doubt, don't pay.

Do I need a passport to attend?

Canadian residents travelling within Canada do not need a passport, though airlines require acceptable identification. If you are crossing the Canada–U.S. border, check current entry requirements with official government sources before you travel.
