About Memorial Cup Getaway — Hockey, Travel & Tradition

An independent editorial project that explains the Memorial Cup, celebrates Canadian junior hockey culture and helps fans plan championship travel responsibly.

Introduction to the Microsite

Memorial Cup Getaway is a focused informational website about one of Canada's oldest hockey trophies and the trips fans take to see it decided.

The name reflects how many supporters experience the tournament: as a getaway. Some plan for months to follow their team if it qualifies; others live within driving distance of a host city and treat the event as a once-in-a-generation local occasion. Either way, the questions are similar — what exactly is this championship, where is it, how do I go, and how do I avoid costly mistakes?

We answer those questions in nine connected pages. Each one has a single purpose, from the overview of the championship to the history of the trophy and the travel-planning guide.

Editorial Purpose

Our goal is to be useful, accurate and calm. Hockey coverage can be loud; travel marketing can be pushy. We try to be neither. Pages are written to inform decisions rather than to sell anything, and every practical recommendation ends by pointing readers to the organisation that actually controls the answer — the CHL, the host club, the venue, a transport provider or a tourism authority.

What we publish

  • Explanations of the championship format and qualification
  • Respectful context on the trophy's commemorative origins
  • Host-city profiles grounded in official announcements
  • Travel, budgeting and accessibility checklists

What we never publish

  • Ticket sales or resale listings
  • Prize draws, giveaways or "winner" notices
  • Travel packages, deposits or hotel deals
  • Unverified schedules or invented statistics

Celebrating Canadian Junior Hockey

Major junior hockey occupies a special place in Canadian sport. The CHL's member leagues operate in communities large and small across the country, along with several American markets, and many clubs are among the most visible institutions in their towns. For local fans, the team is a shared conversation that runs from September to spring.

The Memorial Cup is the culmination of that season. It rewards the three league champions with a final test and gives a host community a chance to show what its hockey culture looks like at full volume. We try to capture that energy while keeping the focus on facts readers can rely on.

Understanding Hockey Tourism

Hockey tourism is simply travel motivated by the game: following a team on the road, visiting a famous arena, or building a holiday around a tournament. In Canada, the Memorial Cup is a natural anchor because it is held in a different community each year and lasts long enough for fans to combine games with time exploring the region.

That also brings responsibilities. Host cities can see heavy demand for rooms and services in a short period, so we encourage fans to plan early, stay flexible and spend thoughtfully with local businesses. Our fan-experience guide covers the etiquette side of the trip.

Travel Research and Preparation

Our travel content is deliberately general. We do not publish flight times, driving durations, room rates or ticket prices because those details change constantly and vary by traveller. Instead, we explain what to check, in what order, and where to check it.

That approach reflects how championship travel actually works. The four-team field is not complete until each league crowns its champion, often only days before the tournament begins. Fans who book rigid, non-refundable plans too early can be caught out. The Travel Planning page sets out a flexible sequence, and Host Cities explains what is officially known about each destination.

Historical Accuracy and Sources

For tournament formats, host selections, dates and results, our primary reference is the Canadian Hockey League's own published material at CHL.ca, supported by announcements from the OHL, QMJHL and WHL, the host clubs and established Canadian news organisations. Where sources disagree — for example on the exact opening date of a future tournament — we describe the discrepancy and recommend the official source rather than picking a number.

Historical results on the Championship History page are limited to well-documented milestones. If you spot an error, the Contact Us page explains how to send a correction.
