Frequently Asked Questions About the Memorial Cup & Hockey Travel
Clear, short answers to the questions fans ask most about Canada's junior hockey championship, host cities, tickets and travel.
What is the Memorial Cup?
The Memorial Cup is the championship trophy of the Canadian Hockey League. It is decided each spring in a tournament between the champions of the OHL, QMJHL and WHL and a host club. It was first awarded in 1919. Learn more in our Memorial Cup Overview.
What does the Canadian Hockey League do?
The CHL is the umbrella organization for Canada's three major junior hockey leagues. It coordinates national programs and events, including the Memorial Cup, and selects tournament hosts through a bidding process.
Which leagues compete in the championship?
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). Each sends its playoff champion, and a host club from one of the leagues completes the four-team field.
How is the host city selected?
Hosting rotates among the three leagues. Clubs from the league whose turn it is submit bids, and the CHL chooses a host after reviewing proposals and touring finalists' facilities. For 2027, an independent selection panel chose Guelph over fellow finalist Kitchener. See Host Cities.
Where can fans find official tournament dates?
On the Canadian Hockey League's website, CHL.ca, and the official channels of the host club. For 2027, CHL materials place the Guelph tournament in late May 2027; confirm the final schedule there before booking anything.
How should visitors plan hockey-related travel?
Verify dates first, use only official ticket channels, book refundable accommodation and transport where possible, build a realistic budget and stay flexible — the full field is often known only days before the tournament. Our Travel Planning guide walks through each step.
Where can official ticket information be found?
Through the ticketing information published by the CHL and the host club. Avoid unofficial sellers and never pay individuals by e-transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency.
What makes the Memorial Cup historically significant?
It is one of the oldest trophies in North American hockey, first awarded in 1919 in memory of Canadians who served and died in the First World War. In 2010 it was rededicated to honour all fallen Canadian military personnel. See Championship History.
Can families attend championship events?
Yes, many families attend junior hockey. Check the venue's age and ticket policies, bring ear protection for small children and plan breaks. Our Hockey Fan Experience page has more tips.
Where can readers research past winners?
The CHL publishes historical Memorial Cup information on CHL.ca. League and club archives are also useful. Our Championship History page lists selected, well-documented milestones.
Does this microsite sell Memorial Cup tickets?
No. Memorial Cup Getaway does not sell, reserve or resell tickets, and it does not offer travel packages, prize draws or giveaways.
Is Memorial Cup Getaway an official CHL website?
No. It is an independent informational website. It is not owned, sponsored, endorsed or operated by the Canadian Hockey League, its member leagues, participating clubs, tournament organisers or sponsors.
